This project aims to kill cancer cells by knocking out their defense against free radicals.
Healthy cells in the body have a plurality of systems to prevent the formation of free radicals. In cancer cells one or more of these systems is often deficient and the cells become dependent on one of the other systems. PIP4K2a is a protein that controls such a system and tests have shown that cancer cells are sensitive to inhibition of PIP4K2a, while healthy cells can tolerate it.
Sprint Bioscience has developed potent and selective inhibitors of PIP4K2a. These compounds are currently being tested in cell models of various cancers, and their drug properties are being optimized at the same time.
